High Voltage Testing Technician

Position Overview

Field Service Technicians travel to customer sites (industrial & commercial) to inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up and collect data of low, medium and high voltage (480 Volt to 600 kV) electrical systems, and moderately complex relay calibration and power metering.

  • Instrument transformer tests
  • Power transformer testing - Doble, TTR, Insulation Resistance, etc.
  • Test both electro-mechanical and solid state relays
  • Cable testing - Tan Delta, Power Factor, VLF, DC Hipot
  • Automatic transfer switch troubleshooting
  • Low, Medium and High voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing
  • Dusting, cleaning, and vacuuming equipment
  • Rotate emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

This position requires the individual to work both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Ability to lift 50lbs and in some instances more; capable of performing both pushing and pulling motions and other repetitive motions. Requires lifting, prolonged, sitting, standing, bending, kneeling and ability to work in cramped/confined spaces. In addition, the use of ladders may be required, which includes the ability to use/carry ladders, lift and climb ladders of up to 30ft. in length. Exposure to high voltage electricity on a frequent basis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands on experience in high & medium voltage testing and troubleshooting of electrical power equipment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Prefer an Associate’s degree from an accredited 2 year technical college or 1-2 years of vocational technical training.
  • NICET or NETA Certification (II, III or IV) or the ability to obtain certification within 1 year from date of hire. AVO certification also considered.
  • Knowledge of the following electrical equipment: circuit breakers, LV/MV/HV, transformers, switchgear, motors, PT’s, CCVT’s, relays.
  • Experience with Hi-Pot, Megger, Ductor, Power Factor and CT ration & saturation.
  • Must have good PC skills including e-mail, internet, data entry and Microsoft Excel; experience with Fluke metering software a plus.
  • Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.
  • Driver’s license in good standing (CDL a plus) and willing to drive daily locally/regionally and be available for periodic overnight travel.
  • Willingness to work overtime, shift work, and weekends.
  • Pass a background check including a pre-employment drug screen to obtain a security clearance upon hire.
